History

The Scamont Group was founded when Luciano Sandri acquired Scamont Engineering in 1978, when the company was operating as a small jobbing firm based in Jeppestown, Johannesburg.

Over the next four years Scamont was strategically repositioned as a manufacturer of Positive Displacement Slurry pumps and in 1983 success in this market required the commissioning of increased production capacity. The launch of the Scamont SP-200 pump in 1984 signalled the company’s entry into the market as a major supplier of slurry pumps throughout the South African mining industry.

For the next decade, strong demand for Scamont’s high quality, well-priced products and expert technical support enabled the company to secure major contracts for the supply of products and repair services to all of the major gold and platinum mining houses in South Africa.

During 1994, Scamont consolidated its leadership position in the market by initiating the development of the sophisticated manufacturing and engineering facilities that it occupies today. The facility was fully commissioned in May 1996 and remains one of the most advanced and efficient of its type in the country. This facility is based on the West Rand just 14 kilometres from Johannesburg’s city centre, where the company operates from an impressive 3,500m² manufacturing facility that has been optimised for new product production and the repair of equipment. Scamont continues to invest in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, ensuring optimum productivity and reliability of supply to its customer base.

In early 2013, Scamont acquired the entire business of Grifo Engineering, which included the Grifo Foundry. Grifo manufactures a high-quality range of Multistage Clearwater pumps, which operate side-by-side with Scamont’s slurry pumps in many installations. The Grifo business has been fully integrated into the Scamont group, broadening the product offering whilst maintaining the highest standards of manufacture, service, and aftersales support. This acquisition reaffirms the company’s vision and commitment to its core competency of being an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), supplying its own range of world-class products, and backing them up with readily available spares, repair capability, and strong technical support.

Scamont is committed to the principles of empowerment and transformation that underpin South Africa’s progressive democracy. To this end, the company has successfully developed and implemented a registered employment equity programme, as well as a formal skills development plan. Scamont is 30.12% Black-owned, complying fully with the BEE-ownership requirements of the South African Mining Charter.

As a measure of Scamont’s commitment to human resource development, the company has set aggressive training targets that it fully expects to meet on a long-term basis. The company boasts a total staff compliment of 124 people, with some having served the company for over 30 years.

Scamont’s competence in manufacturing high quality, precision equipment locally, at reasonable prices, backed by the provision of expert consulting and maintenance services, has positioned the company at the forefront of suppliers of slurry and multistage centrifugal pumps to the South African and global mining industry. This is evidenced both by the longstanding supply relationships with the major SA mining houses. Some of which extend over 25 years, as well as Scamont’s success in other African jurisdictions such as Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, and growth into new geographies including Australia and South East Asia.

Scamont remains owner-managed, run by the second generation of executive management, and committed to the long term growth and sustainability of the business. This core philosophy shows through in the integrity and long-term value-adding approach to all of Scamont’s dealings with its customers.
